We love an adventure at Waggy Wanderers Pet Care, and our founder’s background in ecology and love for exploring off the beaten track has led us to discover some fantastic walking routes at both well-known and lesser used walking locations around Penicuik, Midlothian, and the Scottish Borders. In this blog post, we’ll share our top five favourite walking spots.

1. Deepsyke Forest: A Woodland Wonderland

Deepsyke Forest is a firm favourite due to the diverse landscape and many varied routes to explore. The large coniferous forest features open moorland areas with plenty of boggy puddles to splash in, ponds for swimming (and cleaning up!) and small streams to play in. The grassy clearings and network of forestry tracks, trodden paths, and animal tracks provide endless opportunities for discovery and adventure.

2. Leadburn Community Woodland: A Community Treasure

Leadburn Community Woodland is a former forestry plantation which is now managed by the Friends of Leadburn Community Woodland (FLCW). This unique location boasts regenerating mixed woodland, raised bog, stands of coniferous forest, and large ponds. The dedicated work of community volunteers has transformed this area into a thriving and diverse habitat for local wildlife, making it an ideal spot for nature-loving dogs and their walkers. Although a relatively quiet walk in the early mornings and evenings, some of the narrower pathways at this location may make it challenging for more reactive dogs, and owners of water-loving dogs should check for young geese before letting their dog in for a swim.

3. Rutherford Castle Golf Course: A Disused Gem at the Foot of the Pentlands

The disused Rutherford Castle Golf Course offers a variety of terrains for dogs to explore, including mown and rough grassland, stands of woodland, small streams to play around in and several ponds of various sizes. This location, situated at the foot of the Pentland Hills, is perfect for those seeking a more open space for their dogs to roam and play. Unless your dog has good recall keep your eyes peeled for deer and/or hares to make sure you spot them before your pup does!

4. Bush Estate: Elegant Parkland and Woodland Walks

Bush estate features an open expanse of flat parkland, making it ideal for dogs who prefer more leisurely strolls as well as those who love a good game of fetch! The woodland walks, pond, and shady river add to the picturesque setting, providing a tranquil atmosphere for both dogs and their walkers to enjoy.

5. Penicuik House: A Historical Haven

The Penicuik House grounds offer a combination of history, beauty, and ample space for dogs to explore. With plenty of open space and trails for both woodland lovers and water babies, it is a popular location for dog walkers seeking a more relaxed and scenic experience. Penicuik House is a working estate, so walkers should take note of signage regarding private areas and keep dogs on lead where livestock may be present, and also have a back up plan in mind in case the car park is full.
